Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Urban (PMAY-U) introduced on 25 June 2015 by the Ministry of Housing and Urban Affairs (MoHUA), aims to provide a pucca to all eligible urban households by 2022 in order to address the lack of urban housing among the EWS/LIG and MIG categories including the people in slums. PMAY(U) is been extended by Union Cabinet till 31 December 2024.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Beneficiaries (PMAY)

The beneficiaries under the PMAY scheme can be listed as follows :

In addition to these, people belonging to SC, ST, and OBC categories and women belonging to EWS and LIG income groups will also be eligible for the PMAY scheme.

Identification and Selection of Beneficiaries under PMAY:

The Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana (PMAY-Urban) – Urban schemes mainly target the housing needs of the urban poor. Apart from this, the scheme also addresses the housing needs of slum residents living in narrow pockets of slums with poor infrastructure, sanitation, and drinking water.

Beneficiaries of PMAY-U primarily includes Middle Income Groups (MIGs), Low Income Groups (LIGs), and Economically Weaker Section (EWS).

While the beneficiaries from the EWS category are eligible for complete assistance under the scheme, beneficiaries from LIG categories are only eligible for the Credit-Linked Subsidy Scheme (CLSS) under PMAY.

The Applicant who want to be recognized as a LIG or EWS beneficiary under the scheme, is required to submit an affidavit as income proof to the authority.

Types of PMAY Scheme :

PMAY schemes are divided in two sub-sections on the basis of the area on which they focus:

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Gramin – Previously known as the Indian Awa Yojana, the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana – Gramin (PMAY-G) was christened as PMAY-G in 2016. The aim of this scheme is to provide affordable and accessible housing units to eligible beneficiaries in rural regions of India.

Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana Urban – As the name suggested the Pradhan Mantri Awas Yojana , is focused towards the urban areas in India. At present, there are 4,331 town enlisted under this scheme. This scheme is set function under three different phases :

  • Phase 1: Under 1st phase, the government targeted to cover 100 cities in different states and UTs across the country from April 2015 to March 2017.
  • Phase 2: Under 2nd phase, the government to cover 200 more cities in different states and UTs across the country from April 2017 to March 2019.
  • Phase 3: Under 3rd phase, the government targeted to cover the cities which have been left out in phase 1 and phase 2 and attain the target by the end of December 2024.

How to Get PMAY Interest Subsidy?

  • Apply for a loan from any listed lending institution for subsidy.
  • The lending institution will review your application and if you are eligible, then your application will be sent to the Central Nodal Agency.
  • Upon verification, if your application is approved and no discrepancies are found, then the Central Nodal Agency will disburse the subsidy amount to the lending institution.
  • This amount will be credited to your account by the lending institution which will lower your total loan amount.
  • After this, you can continue paying the EMIs towards the balanced loan amount.

PMAY Loan Eligibility:

To ensure the transparency in the project, the PMAY beneficiaries will be selected on the basis of the “The Socio Economic and Caste Census 2011”. In this the government will consult the panchayat and the tehsil before finalizing the PMAY beneficiaries list to ensure that only the right people get the housing.

You can apply for PMAY through its official portal. Its application process is very straightforward and easy to use. All you need to do is enter your Aadhar number, follow onscreen instruction, complete and submit the application form.
